We are in the process of becoming a certified B Corporation as soon as we have been in business for one year. We are doing this by measuring and managing our social and environmental performance with the best tools available.
At DUSK, we hold ourselves accountable for the decisions we make, and part of that accountability is transparency. We will be sharing how we work, what we do, with whom and invite you to be part of it.
The first rule of mission-driven business is "no margin, no mission." Besides being a commercial business there is a social and environmental aspect and impact in everything we do and we require our partners and collaborators to have the same.
We will measure the company’s entire social and environmental performance by evaluating how our operations and business model impact our workers, community, environment, and customers. Positive impact is supported by transparency and accountability requirements - we commit to consider stakeholder impact for the long term by building it into your company’s legal structure and culture.
We will undertake a periodic assessment of our business based on a philosophy of a Triple Bottom Line - that businesses need to be fiscally, socially and environmentally responsible. We work on this all year, and we work hard to balance all the demands of our work to create the best possible outcomes for everyone.
To be transparent, this is a lot of experimentation and give-and-take, and it’s not always perfect. We are still a really small business. We have much smaller budgets and staff than many of our competitors, and although that is not an excuse, sometimes we don’t have the capacity or influence to change the situation. We’re always striving to be the best we can be, and we appreciate all the feedback we receive! We read and consider all of it, and a lot of it inspires future plans.
Looking forward to 2021, we have two key areas of investigation. One, we want to become more data-driven to measure our impact, and learn more about our carbon impacts and develop more specific policies around carbon emissions going forward. We look forward to keeping you in the loop about our work.
First initiative to become more data driven and measure functional and social impact is to send out a donation of 100 menstrual cups to volunteers in exchange for a feedback survey. We will process that data to help us better determine functional and social impact, reach, and organizational compatibility.
